I scored a 63 on the Educational Psychology CLEP. I even mentioned this when I was interviewed for English teaching job in Japan, that I’d studied educational psychology in college. I don’t think it was the deciding factor, but I got the job!
This one is not difficult to pass, not if you’ve already passed the Intro Psychology CLEP. What was difficult was staying focused while studying for this one. My interest in psychology was on its way out. Whatever interest I had in being a psychologist was gone. Despite that, I still learned some interesting things, not many I can recall off the bat, because I forget everything right after the test.
The study I remember is the visual cliff. I think I saw a picture in the REA study book of a baby crawling on a table with a checkered countertop table cloth. Is depth perception learned or inherit? This video shows you the visual cliff, but is related to visual cues.
There are some other great child study videos, like this one of a child psychopath, but such questions won’t be asked of you unless they’ve updated the test to make it more interesting. Children who display psychopathic tendencies are to be feared.
Anyways, like I said, the test is easy. “But I have no psychology test taking experience,” some might say.
“Do not be deterred,” I say to these people. I’m going to link you to several practice tests. I ensure you there is no need to complete all of them. Do make yourself comfortable with the test format and what you might be expected to know.
Practice tests aren’t the end all, though, definitely should not be solely relied upon.
What you need is Instant Cert, the most time efficient way to study. All the answers are in their flash cards and specific exam feedback forum. I admit going through flash cards is not fun. But if you want to pass, and if you want to pass fast, then there is no better way; you must go through the cards. Not one or two times, but at least three. Don’t fill in the blanks, just read.
However, sometimes the mind can only take so much. You don’t want to go loony while studying for psychology exams. So if you feel your mind is approaching its breaking point, have a look at these videos from study.com. The sites known to help credit by examination test takers, and known to have some good video courses on other subjects as well.
Finally, as promised, here are the practice tests: Peterson’s and Free-Clep-Prep.
Begin studying, sign up for an exam at your nearest test center, and get your three college credits. Then, in an order, take the Intro Psychology or Intro Sociology or Human Growth & Development CLEPs next because all the information overlaps.

You can go to Modernstates.org for free CLEP preparation. If you complete their self-paced “program” (AKA watch the videos and answer the practice questions) then you can request a free CLEP voucher and they will actually pay for you to take the test. Then they will reimburse you for the testing center fee. I prepared for Human Growth and Development in about one week and passed with a 60. They have a really great program.
