If you’re a recovering drug abuser, or a dealer, then get some college credit for your life experience! If you don’t have any of those past experiences, not to worry—The Substance Abuse DSST was one of my favorite exams: an exam you can prepare for in one day and pass the very next. And to make it even better, it’s worth upper level credit: You’d think that would mean it would be difficult.
Minimal study, four to five hours, with Instant Cert and the Degree Forum was enough for me to pass. 400 is a passing score, and I scored 448.
Know all your drugs, the types, legal and illegal, their effects on body and mind, ones that are abused and ones used for medical treatment. Memorizing the names of psychiatric drugs can be tricky, especially their generic names. But there are areas you can not know and still pass.
The drug that makes up the biggest pie of the exam is alcohol—12%. Not a significant amount, but it gives you an idea of how wide the field is you’ll be tested on.
There’s a good chance much of what you encounter you’ll already know. Or you’ll be able to deduce the right answer from the options.
Know the DEA drug classes.
If you want some questions to answer with a time limit, have a look at the Peterson’s exams. The questions might not be worded the same as the ones on the real exam, but you will absorb the extra information. Review all your answers at the end of each test. Sometimes I take notes, better commits facts to memory. Don’t let a low practice test score discourage you, they’re often found to be harder.
Final piece of advice: Follow this one up with the Here’s to Your Health DSST for maximum value of your time. Information overlap.
Cheers
